I'm going to talk about uptrends today but you can flip it on its head for downtrends. Downtrends are a bit different in that they tend to be more aggressive but the premise is the same. This is a big thing and many traders including me struggle with it. You have a big monstrous uptrend or downtrend; you want to get onboard on a trader - how do you onboard it - what strategy do you utilise? It doesn't really matter how you ride a trend as long as you manage the risk. So even if you took the ATR and took 3 times daily range as your total risk in terms of pips or percentage that is one way of doing it! Sometimes getting onboard blindly even works but let's look at some strategies we can use. It is not my thing but I know traders who make lots of money buying at highs on strong uptrends because an uptrend is an uptrend and its likely to continue pushing. We can use things like trendlines breaks; that way you don't get caught on full reversals and it gives you a reason to wait. Number two is to use a reversal strategy within that trend.
