Cretaceous Russia was home to a megatheropod that may have rivaled the biggest ever discovered. "Reznyadrakon," or the Carnage Dragon, was a tyrannosaurine closely related to Tyrannosaurus, Zhuchengtyrannus, and Tarbosaurus that lived in the Udurchukan Formation of Maastrichtian Russia. Known from several fragmentary specimens, it approached or matched Tyrannosaurus rex in body size and hunted hadrosaurs and sauropods. This huge Russian tyrannosaur changes our understanding of Late Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystems in northern Asia and demonstrates that gigantic tyrannosaurines may have been more common than previously thought.
Thanks to my father-in-law for helping me come up with "Reznyadrakon"!
