BMW 330i Expansion Tank Replacement DIY (2019-Present BMW G20, G22 430i, G42 230i, G01 X3 xDrive30i)

►As the engine coolant heats up with the engine, it expands and needs a place to go. As the name implies, the expansion tank is where that coolant ends up, but not if the tank has reached its end. Expansion tanks don't last forever, and for BMWs, they're somewhat of a maintenance item. As such, replacing your BMW B48's expansion tank is likely something you'll have to do at higher mileage.

The tank is traditionally plastic, and the constant engine heat fatigues the plastic, making it brittle. This leads to cracks in the tank and blown seals on the tank's cap, which in turn leads to a loss of pressure in the coolant system. The pressure raises the coolant's boiling point, and without it, you're on the fast track to overheating your engine.
