BMW 330i Thermostat Heat Module Replacement DIY (2019-Present BMW G20, G22 430i, G42 230i, G01 X3)

►Regulating engine coolant temperature is as complex as it ever has been. The coolant thermostat once had two moving parts, but in the case of modern BMW engines, it's an electronically controlled rotary valve that precisely delivers the perfect amount of coolant to an individual area of the engine just to keep it at the perfect operating temperature. It's an incredible component that shows just how far we've come, but it'll still fail and require replacing. The only difference now is how it breaks.

A common failure within the heat management module typically involves a restriction of coolant flow, which can cause the engine to run hotter than anticipated. This is because the position of the rotary valve in the heat management module is stuck in its neutral (warm-up) position. Typical stored faults for a failing/failed HMM are 20F220, 20F206, and 20A704. Overheating an engine can cause serious and irreparable damage, so be sure to replace this component before using the engine for any extended period.
