"Should I avoid starchy foods?" That might be the wrong question to ask. Because whether it's type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes you've been living with, eating starchy foods is not the root cause of diabetes. Understandably, you might be concerned with some plant-based foods that are also high glycemic index foods because they tend to spike your blood sugar. With that in mind, you would want to avoid potatoes (red, white, hot), watermelon, pineapple, and the rest of high GI foods. So now, looking for the worst fruits and worst vegetables for diabetics is definitely one way to start when creating meal plans
In general, starchy foods are a good source of energy and nutrients. They contain fiber, calcium, iron, and B vitamins. And to worry about some people talking about starchy foods being fattening delights is not necessary. The truth is, gram for gram starch contain fewer than half the calories of fat.
Speaking of fat, vegan-friendly plant-based doctor Ron Weiss encourages people with diabetes to eat the right starchy foods to manage the condition. Most importantly, removing from your plate the saturated fat coming from animals would be the best thing to do. Because that is the root of the problem.
