The CityCat is a passenger ferry service operating on the Brisbane River in Queensland, Australia. It is one of the city’s most distinctive forms of public transport and plays an important role in connecting riverside suburbs with the central business district and major destinations along the river. Operated by Brisbane City Council through its public transport arm, the service complements the city’s bus and train networks, providing both commuters and visitors with an efficient and scenic mode of travel.
CityCats are high-speed catamarans capable of carrying hundreds of passengers per trip. The vessels are designed for quick boarding and disembarking, with wide gangways and open deck spaces. Inside, the ferries feature comfortable seating, shaded outdoor areas, and accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility. Their modern design makes them well-suited to the tidal conditions of the Brisbane River.
The service runs frequently throughout the day, stopping at a network of terminals stretching from the University of Queensland at St Lucia in the west to Northshore Hamilton in the east. Popular stops include South Bank, Eagle Street Pier, New Farm Park, and Bulimba. Timetables are coordinated with peak commuting periods while maintaining regular services during off-peak hours and weekends.
In addition to the full-length CityCat routes, smaller CityHopper ferries provide free travel on shorter sections of the river within the inner city. This allows both residents and tourists to explore central Brisbane without cost, further enhancing the accessibility of the riverfront.
The CityCat service has become a symbol of Brisbane’s identity, reflecting the city’s close connection to its river. It provides an environmentally friendly and efficient transport option while also offering passengers some of the best views of the city’s skyline, bridges, and riverside precincts.
South Bank is one of Brisbane’s most popular riverside precincts, located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River directly opposite the central business district. It is a cultural, recreational, and dining hub, attracting both locals and tourists throughout the year. The area was originally the site of Brisbane’s 1988 World Expo and was redeveloped into a public parkland and cultural district following the event.
Today, South Bank covers 17 hectares of landscaped parklands, walkways, and entertainment spaces. One of its most distinctive features is Streets Beach, a man-made inner-city lagoon surrounded by sandy beaches and subtropical gardens. The precinct also includes the Arbour, a kilometre-long walkway covered with bougainvillea, and River Quay, which combines green space with riverside dining options.
South Bank is home to major cultural institutions such as the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, and the Gallery of Modern Art. It regularly hosts festivals, outdoor markets, and community events. With its mix of green spaces, family attractions, restaurants, and cultural venues, South Bank has become a vibrant symbol of Brisbane’s lifestyle, offering river views, leisure activities, and year-round entertainment in the heart of the city.
