HMS Cumberland – The Last British Heavy Cruiser

British heavy cruisers, as a general rule, tend to be overlooked. Unless your name is HMS Exeter, anyway. This is a shame, as these were interesting ships with interesting careers.
Take HMS Cumberland, for example. The last of the Counties to survive, and one with quite an interesting career. From arriving just too late to engage Graf Spee, to her second life as a trial ship.
Cumberland would ultimately endure into the late 1950s, well after most of her sisters were gone. That's not a bad run, by any means. Aside from a short stint in reserve, the ship was in service for thirty years.
Not as impressive these days, with how long modern ships last, but for the time? Quite an achievement.
