On Saturday, May 6, 2017 the new drop table at the Nelsonville Shops of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway was used for the first time, to remove the No. 3 driver from their Baldwin No.3. The Right side journal had been running warm, and after we removed the driver found out why. Bad pitting from years of static display, cracked crown brass and an oil groove with sharp edges that served to scrape the oil off the journal instead of drawing the oil under the bearing.
The axle will be turned, new brasses installed and No.3 will be back in service very soon!
