DIY cotton candy makes gorgeous tufts of cotton plant for holiday wreath cakes, unicorn hair, clouds, you name it! I use isomalt instead of sugar for two important reasons: 1. it won't yellow as quickly as sugar (and I am a distracted baker!) and 2. it's not quite as hydroscopic, so it's more moisture-resistant...won't get as sticky as quickly, and will hold it's shape longer!
Still, homemade cotton candy is not a very long-lived decoration...so be sure to add it at the end, day of your event!
