General Signal had essentially pioneered the concept of the electronic crossing bell. The design started around 1992 with the creation of its first bell model and railroads began to implement them in the late 90s. The earliest examples consisted of a Western Cullen Hayes bell base, unpainted PVC piping, a speaker, and a circuit board. They became known as the "Prototype" GS Bell even though they were effectively the original design for the Type 1. As General Signal started to see the potential in this type of bell, they soon created their own bases, painted the exterior plastic, and created what we know as the GS Type 1 Bell.
Since then, the design has hardly changed with later models. Changes really only included weatherproofing and different bell tones with the 2 and 3 Types. Today almost every modern Class 1 Railroad has used or continues to use them.
