🚁 LiDAR Odometry-Based Flight (GPS-Denied Navigation)
I recently flew my drone in my home running ArduPilot in Loiter mode, using odometry from a LIO-SLAM package running on a Raspberry Pi 5 — with no GPS. The setup used LiDAR-based localization for stable indoor flight.
The video combines three views: RViz2 (PointCloud2 + trajectory), drone camera, and Mission Planner.
Lately, I’ve been testing different LIO-SLAM packages for UAVs — some fail when deployed on real drones, some need too much compute for small UAVs, and others rely on prebuilt maps. It’s challenging but exciting progress toward lightweight, GPS-denied UAV navigation!
