India after Independence [Lecture 08 of 28 October 2014] UCLA Fall 2014 course. The lecture begins effectively with a discussion of an article by Gardiner Harris in the "New York Times" on malnourishment in India, especially among children. Most of the discussion revolves around 'development'; the creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Contrast between Bombay's slums and Antilla, the billon-dollar plus home of Ambani; growth of the middle class in India. Meaning of the middle class and the notion of social goods. Interpretation of the middle class in India as a group of people that have opted out of the state.
