Abstract
English language teaching (ELT) at the tertiary educational level provides a conducive setting for developing intercultural citizens who often engage in the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF). What is significant about intercultural citizenship education is its focus on realizing transformative change through activity – and not just awareness raising – with the ultimate goal of creating an inclusive disposition. In this seminar, Peter De Costa will share with us the various projects and activities in which he explores how intercultural citizenship education and ELF research agendas address issues of power inequalities via an engagement.
Speaker
Peter I. De Costa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics, Languages & Cultures and the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University. His research areas include emotions, identity, ideology and ethics in educational linguistics. He also studies social (in)justice issues. He is the co-editor of TESOL Quarterly and the First Vice-President of the American Association for Applied Linguistics.
The ‘Translanguaging & Trans-Semiotizing Research Group’ Channel aims at building a Community of Practice (CoP) of both emergent and experienced scholars for academic exchange on Translanguaging and Trans-semiotising research and pedagogies. It serves as a bridge between theory and practice, an interactive platform for intellectual dialogues across different generations and diverse contexts, a space for imagination, criticality and creativity, and an innovative Public Pedagogy forum for 21st Century students, teachers and researchers.
