Algarve – Portogallo 5: 4 passi per Tavira, i ponti sul Rio Gilão , le chiese ed il castello

Tavira sorge lungo le rive del rio Gilão, nell'Algarve orientale, a 28 km ad est di Faro.
Il fiume Gilão attraversa la città e sfocia in mare. Le maree dell'estuario si alzano oltre la città stessa, permettendo ai pescatori di raccogliere vermi durante la bassa marea.
Il centro di Tavira è Praça da República che si apre allo sbocco del ponte ad arcate Ponte antiga sobre o Rio Gilão. Indagini archeologiche hanno provato che il ponte non è di epoca romana ma moresca. Risale al XII secolo ma fu completamente rifatto dopo il terremoto del 1755. Dopo la piena del 1990 il ponte fu danneggiato e da allora è adibito al solo traffico pedonale.
La Igreja da Misericórdia fu stabilita a Tavira all’inizio del XVI secolo. Inizialmente era costituita da un’unica cappella laterale nel convento di San Francesco. Il portale rinascimentale è sovrastato da una nicchia con l’immagine di Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia, affiancata dagli scudi del Portogallo e della città e da due altorilievi che rappresentano San Pietro e San Paolo. Si segnalano la decorazione rinascimentale delle colonne (con l’adozione di mascheroni per i capitelli) e le pale dell’altare maggiore e delle cappelle collaterali, ottimi esempi di decorazione in legno intagliato e dorato del XVIII secolo. Alle pareti, è degno di nota il rivestimento di azulejos del XVIII secolo, che rappresenta le opere della Misericordia e scene della vita di Cristo.
Castelo de Tavira è un castello moresco parzialmente in rovina, situato su una lieve altura che domina il centro. Intorno stanno i resti delle antiche mura di Tavira. All’interno del castello si può visitare il giardino fiorito. Per arrivare a piedi al castello si percorrono piccole stradine in salita.
Il Mercado da Ribeira fu inaugurato il 30 giugno 1887, dopo due anni di costruzione. È una costruzione rettangolare, a un solo piano, strutturata internamente ed esternamente dai due assi definiti dagli ingressi. L'edificio ha funzionato come mercato comunale fino al 1999, dopo essere stato sottoposto a lavori di riabilitazione e restauro l'anno successivo per introdurre funzioni commerciali e culturali più moderne.

Tavira is located on the banks of the Rio Gilão in the eastern Algarve, 28 km east of Faro.
The River Gilão runs through the city and empties into the sea. The tides of the estuary rise beyond the city itself, allowing fishermen to collect worms at low tide.
The centre of Tavira is Praça da República which opens onto the mouth of the arched bridge Ponte antiga sobre o Rio Gilão. Archaeological investigations have proven that the bridge is not Roman but Moorish. It dates back to the 12th century but was completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. After the flood of 1990 the bridge was damaged and has since then been used only for pedestrian traffic.
The Igreja da Misericórdia was established in Tavira at the beginning of the 16th century. It initially consisted of a single side chapel in the convent of São Francisco. The Renaissance portal is surmounted by a niche with the image of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia, flanked by the coats of arms of Portugal and the city and two high reliefs representing Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Noteworthy are the Renaissance decoration of the columns (with the use of masks for the capitals) and the altarpieces of the main altar and the collateral chapels, excellent examples of 18th-century carved and gilded wood decoration. On the walls, noteworthy is the 18th-century azulejo covering, which represents the works of Mercy and scenes from the life of Christ.
Castelo de Tavira is a partially ruined Moorish castle, located on a slight hill overlooking the center. Around it are the remains of the ancient walls of Tavira. Inside the castle you can visit the flower garden. To reach the castle on foot you walk along small uphill streets.
The Mercado da Ribeira was inaugurated on June 30, 1887, after two years of construction. It is a rectangular, single-story building, internally and externally structured by two axes defined by the entrances. The building served as a municipal market until 1999, after undergoing rehabilitation and restoration work the following year to introduce more modern commercial and cultural functions.
