When you're hiking out in the middle of nowhere, your safety tech matters. In this video, I dive into the emergency detection features of the Apple Watch, Garmin watches, and even Android options like the Google Pixel Watch. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so I went through the actual documentation to give you a clear, side-by-side comparison.
I walk through how Apple’s fall detection works—including the new satellite SOS feature that kicks in when there’s no cellular signal. I show you what happens step-by-step when a fall is detected, and how your location and medical ID are automatically shared with emergency services and contacts. It’s pretty impressive, especially if you're often hiking solo.
Then I break down Garmin's incident detection—what models support it, how it relies on Bluetooth and cellular signal, and where it falls short in comparison to Apple. Garmin does offer an LTE watch that improves things with Garmin Response, but it still doesn’t quite match the hands-off emergency automation that Apple delivers.
I also touch on Pixel Watch and other Wear OS options, plus backup safety features like live tracking, trackback, flashlights, and sirens. If you’re deciding between a Garmin or an Apple Watch for outdoor safety, I cover everything you need to know based on real-world use and experience.
