Chopin's Étude Op.10, No.1 in C Major, the grandiose opening piece of his Etudes opus 10, composed already in 1829 and played here according to his own tempo indication (placed in the correct historical tradition of metrical reading).
Chopin was extremely sensitive to exact playing in what he felt was the perfect tempo of his compositions. His metronome was never far from his piano, Carl Mikuli writes. As much this might cause an initial shock to you (I know the feeling...) in the context of his time, there is very little, if any doubt this metrical way of reading the metronome was adopted also by Chopin. In this tempo, it becomes clear as well why this etude is a brilliant homage to Bach. I'll talk on that aspect in the Wednesday video.
