Hiking in the Aegean Islands - Andros Routes #2

This trail links Vourkoti with Chora via Apikia and Katakalaioi. The path runs roughly 7 km and takes about three hours at a moderate pace. I walk along cobbled sections, through dense vegetation and open viewpoints — classic hiking in Greece and a great example of hiking in Andros within the Aegean Islands.

Along the route I stop at the Sariza spring in Apikia. The spring’s mineral-rich water has long been prized; a 1932 royal decree recorded its therapeutic reputation, and a nearby inscription reads: “Rejoice, stranger, remember when you return to your homeland that you owe your life to me first.” I share that history as I record the surroundings and the plants that grow around the source.

I take a short detour to the Pythara Waterfalls, a small ecosystem that supports many birds, amphibians and rare wildflowers along the ravine. Pythara still irrigates nearby fields, and between 1863 and 1936 its flow powered the largest watermill in the Balkans.

During the hike I talk about the botany and local plants (hey don't forget I am a herbal medicine instructor) — the herbs and flowers you’ll see, how they change with altitude, and what they tell us about the island’s environments.

I also include the drive from the port of Andros to the trailhead: a 90-minute, challenging mountain route with tight turns and constant sea-and-mountain views. It’s a useful segment for anyone planning hiking during the summer holidays, while traveling in Greece, or compiling a list of must-do experiences in Greece.
