Costruita nel luogo occupato dal palazzo reale prima del terremoto del 1755, la Piazza del Commercio (Praça do Comércio) è la zona più importante di Lisbona e, per molti anni, fu la porta di Lisbona al commercio marittimo.
La fisionomia della Piazza del Commercio è data da un complesso di edifici con porticati lungo tre dei suoi lati, mentre il lato sud è aperto e guarda verso il Tago. Storicamente qui arrivavano le barche dei mercanti ed era la porta di Lisbona.
Vicino alla piazza, sulle sponde del fiume, vi è la stazione fluviale di Cais de Sodré, da dove partono le escursioni per il Tago e le barche attraversano il fiume.
L'imponente Piazza del Commercio di Lisbona è uno dei punti nevralgici della città, nonché una visita essenziale durante un viaggio a Lisbona. È uno spazio sempre vivo e pieno di vita in cui risaltano due punti d'interesse principali:
Arco di Trionfo di Rua Augusta - Situato sul lato settentrionale della Piazza del Commercio, dall'Arco di Trionfo parte la Rua Augusta, la strada più importante della La Baixa.
L'Arco di Trionfo della Rua Augusta fu progettato dall'architetto Santos de Carvalho, per celebrare la costruzione della città, dopo il grande terremoto. La sua edificazione fu conclusa nel 1873 e le sue statue rappresentano, fra gli altri, Vasco de Gama e il Marchese di Pombal.
Statua equestre di Giuseppe I - Scolpita in bronzo da Machado de Castro nel 1775 rappresenta Giuseppe I, il Re portoghese che governava Lisbona durante il terremoto.
Rua Augusta è una famosa strada nel centro di Lisbona, in Portogallo, che inizia dal famoso arco di trionfo e collega Praça do Comércio a Praça do Rossio. Rende omaggio all'augusta figura del re D. José I. Ha un'alta concentrazione di commercio, poiché l'intera strada è fiancheggiata da diversi negozi, molti dei quali di grandi marchi internazionali. È stata chiusa al traffico dalla fine degli anni '80 ed è spesso occupata da artisti di strada, artigiani e venditori ambulanti. Parallelamente a questa ci sono le strade di Ouro e Prata.

Lisbon's most important square: the Praça do Comércio was built on the site where the old Royal Palace used to exist before it was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. It was for decades Lisbon's main entrepôt, and crucial for its maritime trade.
The southern end of the plaza is open and looks out onto the Tagus River. The other three sides have yellow-colored buildings with arches all along the façade. When the square was first built, the commercial ships would unload their goods directly onto this square, as it was considered the “door” to Lisbon.
On the river bank, near the square, is the Cais de Sodré ferry terminal from which several ferries depart down the Tagus River.
Commerce Square houses two major points of interest:
Rua Augusta Arch - Located on the north side of Commerce Square is the Rua Augusta Arch which gives way to the boulevard Rua Augusta, the most prominent boulevard in Baixa.
This triumphal arch was designed by the Portuguese architect Santos de Carvalho to celebrate the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. It was completed in 1873. On top of its several pillars, it's adorned with numerous statues that represent important Portuguese figures like Vasco da Gama and the Marquis of Pombal.
Equestrian Statue of Joseph I - The bronze equestrian statue of Joseph I of Portugal (1750 – 1777) was designed by Machado de Castro in 1775. Joseph I was King of Portugal during the Great Earthquake.
Rua Augusta is a famous street in downtown Lisbon, Portugal, which starts at the famous triumphal arch and connects Praça do Comércio to Praça do Rossio. It pays homage to the august figure of King D. José I. It has a high concentration of commerce, as the entire street is lined with several stores, many of them from major international brands. It has been closed to traffic since the end of the 1980s and is often occupied by street artists, artisans and street vendors. Parallel to this are the streets of Ouro and Prata.
