On April 19, 1944, a Royal Air Force Dakota 576 training flight ran out of fuel while trying to land at Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. The aircraft clipped the trees and crashed just miles from the runway. Two young airmen, Pilot Officer J.M. Talbot and Pilot Officer T.S. Wardlow, were killed, while Sgt. T.R. Moss survived the crash and was found dazed but alive.
Nearly 80 years later, the wreckage of Dak 576 still lies in the forest. A cairn has been built here to honor the crew, and today we hike through rough terrain to see what remains of this WWII crash site. It’s a place that’s both a piece of history and a memorial to the men who never made it home.
In this video, we’ll share the story of the crash, the dedication of the memorial, and what it’s like to stand at the site today. Join us as we explore the wreckage, reflect on its history, and bring you along on this unforgettable hike into the past.
