The goal of this session was to explore the zoia euroburo’s tools for interfacing and synchronizing different instruments. The ornament sequences the Lyra and the Zoia uses pitch tracking to follow the notes the Lyra is playing and convert it into midi data in real time and send it to the Matriarch’s sequencer. Terra used to solo over the sequence.
—Matriarch—
Mono mode with oscillators set to squarewave with a small amount of PWM. Filters set to stereo lowpass mode with triangle LFO modulating the cutoffs in opposite directions for stereo panning. VCA controlled by ZOIA and synchronized with ornament sequence. The sequencer has a 3 note ascending triad stored in memory which is transposed to follow the Lyra’s pitch through audio to midi conversion using the ZOIA. The sequencers rate randomly changes using an asynchronous smooth random LFO borrowed from the matrixbrute. Matriarch also running through Cosmos in shortest granular delay mode with moderate drift, 0.7ish feedback, a small amount of suppression, and some tweaks to blur during performance.
Matriarch Arp Chords:
Am Ascending
Em Ascending
Bm Ascending
Am Ascending
—Lyra—
Lyra using A Dorian Mode tuning [A B C D] [E F# G A] with 40% sharpness on each voice and moderate amounts of delay and drive.
Descending root progression controlled by ornament 8
A E B A
8 5 2 1
—Ornament—
Cells 1-4 play melodic notes of descending root progression on the Lyra, cells 5-8 are used to create small spaces between notes and manipulate sequence length for smoother control of the matriarch arpeggiator. The Zoia applies random voltage on each cell change to the 2x input so the length of each individual cell can be randomly doubled to add variety to the sequence.
1 → 5
2 → 6
3 → 7
4 → 8
8 → 1
In other words:
A → E → B → A (8va lower) → (looping point)
—TERRA—
Using the ‘Soft Solo’ algorithm with Variation for modulation oscillator 1 & 2, and modulation oscillator 1 shifted up an octave. This is a monophonic algorithm with smart glissando controlled by the order and strength of pressure applied to the sensors. Moderate amounts of Distortion, FM Feedback, and built in reverb.
A pentatonic tuning [ A C D E G A C D E G A ] [A 8va higher]
Sensor A - Modulation by noise
Sensor B - Modulation by oscillator 1
Sensor C - modulation by oscillator 2
Sensor D - LPF
Sea - Feedback from FX out in FM input
Sun - Distortion Drive
—ZOIA—
The Zoia does most of the work in this patch, translating the audio sent from the Lyra into midi data which controls the matriarch’s sequencer. It also generate a random voltage on each cell trigger received from ornament and when that exceeds 1V it triggers the 2x input of the ornament doubling the length of the cells duration to create variation in the sequence. Additionally the ZOIA has two VCA envelops it dynamically selects between depending on the same 1V threshold so that the matriarchs arpeggiator plays for a corresponding amount of time when the cell duration is doubled. These notes are the structure of the ZOIAs internal modules and their connections to each other.
Pitch Control (Lyra 8 Pitch tracking for midi conversion)
Lyra 8 Audio → Zoia Audio input → Pitch follower → Quantizer pitch input (A dorian) → Midi Note Out → Zoia Midi output → Matriarch midi input
Arp Trigger (Triggers Matriarch arpeggiator for duration of Ornament 8 active cell)
Ornament 8 Pulsar Output Cells 1-4 → 1/8” TS Converter → Zoia CV In → Comparator → ADSR Envelope Triggers → Quantizer Trigger input
Arp VCA (Triggers Matriarch VCA )
Ornament 8 Pulsar Output Cells 1-4 → 1/8” TS Converter → Zoia CV In → Comparator → ADSR Envelope Trigger → Zoia CV Out → Disting Mk 4. A1 Precision Adder for CV offset → Matriarch VCA input
2x Ornament envelope switch (Doubles cell duration for sequence variation)
Ornament 8 Pulsar Output Cells 1-4 → 1/8” TS Converter → Zoia CV In → Comparator → Random Value on trigger → Zoia CV output (20% depth for 2V output range) → 1/8” TS Converter → Ornament 8 2x input
Random value → comparator → in selector output switch
VCA env 1 (6 second duration)
VCA env 2 (12 second duration) both into → In selector → Zoia CV Out → Matriarch VCA input
Audio recorded directly into iPhone XR via iConnectAudio4+ interface.
