"Fast boxing'' was invented by Tung Ying Kit, he quoted the fast boxing is from superior classical Kung Fu. Many people misunderstand that Taijiquan can only be practiced in slow speed. In Taijiquan Theory, the words "slow yield fast" and "slow hands yield fast hands" people often just interpret by taking a paragraph or sentence, and often derogatory.
Practicing Taijiquan in slow speed for technique (or for health), but quick training can be used to practice Jin (energy, vigour, power, strength), in actual combat, "Taijiquan" also advocates "acting swift when necessary," and does not advocate use slow blindly.
徐立根 演譯董英傑的太極快又稱 「英傑快拳」。董英傑論述快拳說:「快拳是由上乘功夫經實用而發明,有慢有快,慢是以靜制動,快是發勁神速;有陰陽,有虛實;有精神,有蓄神;身法巧妙,姿勢精彩。然非有三年以上的功夫,不易領略也。」
很多人誤解太極拳只能慢練慢打,《太極拳論》裡「慢讓快耳」、「手慢讓手快」的章句,更經常被斷章取義作為支持太極只能慢練慢打的依據,甚至被訛傳成「以慢打快」。
太極拳慢練通常為練功(或養生),快練則可練勁,實戰時,《太極拳論》也主張「動急則急應」,並不主張盲目慢用。
