What Military Strategy Is Changing the Course of the Russia-Ukraine War?

In the summer of 2024, Ukraine launched a surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk region, quickly seizing more than 900 km² of territory. But this advance lasted only two months. Russia launched a counter-offensive with reinforcements from North Korea, recaptured Suca and pushed back Ukrainian troops around Kursk. Today, Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory. But the war on the front has become a war of attrition, inch by inch, rather than rapid advances.

Both sides are entrench themselves along a thousand kilometers of front line from Donetsk to Kharkiv. For Ukraine, the war has become more of a struggle to buy time than a territorial defense. However, a shortage of military personnel, a shortage of volunteers and a shortage of ammunition pose serious threats. In contrast, Russia continues to advance, albeit slowly, maintaining its superiority in manpower and ammunition production.

There are two most striking elements on the ground: Ukraine’s inventive drone technologies and Russia’s artillery power. Drones equipped with shotguns or flamethrowers are being tested directly on the front lines. On the other hand, Russia continues to use its artillery class most effectively with its high firepower and continuous production.

This war rewards not only weapon superiority but also production continuity, adaptation to the field and the ability to quickly adapt to the nature of war. The winners will not be only the strong, but also those who adapt best to the conditions.
