Cucumber Dosa (also known as Southekai Dosa or Southekayi Dose in Kannada) is a traditional South Indian dosa made with cucumber, rice, and coconut. It's particularly popular in the Udupi and coastal Karnataka regions. This dosa is light, flavorful.
🥒 Cucumber Dosa – Description
Cucumber Dosa is a soft, with a fresh, mildly sweet and tangy flavor thanks to the cucumber and coconut. It’s perfect for breakfast or a light evening meal. Unlike traditional dosas, this variety uses cucumber in the batter and skips urad dal. It pairs well with coconut chutney or jaggery.
🧾 Ingredients
Raw rice – 1 cup (preferably dosa rice or Sona Masoori)
Grated cucumber – 1 cup (peeled if the skin is thick)
1 tsp methi seeds
Fresh grated coconut – ½ cup
1/4 cup cooked rice
Salt – to taste
Water – as needed
👩🍳 Instructions
Soak Rice:
Wash and soak the rice and fenugreek seeds for about 3–4 hours.
Grind Batter:
Grind together cucumber, cooked rice and coconut
Drain the soaked rice and grind it along.
Add water little by little to make a smooth, slightly thick batter.
Add salt and adjust the consistency to be pourable but not too runny (like regular dosa batter).
Ferment for 10 hours.
Cook the Dosa:
Heat a dosa tawa or non-stick pan. Pour a ladleful of batter and gently spread it (don’t press too hard).
Cook on medium flame until the edges turn golden. Flip and cook the other side if desired (optional).
Serve Hot:
Serve with coconut chutney, butter, or jaggery syrup.
✅ Tips
Use tender cucumber for better taste and less water content.
Don’t make the batter too thin, or it may stick to the pan.
You can also add finely chopped coriander or curry leaves for extra flavor.
