It’s the time of year when cherry blossoms are popping open and sharing their beauty the world over. If you are ever lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to Japan during peak sakura season, your breath will be taken away by the beauty. The Sakura Martini is an ode to this beauty, and uses one of the staple beverages of Japan, sake. The cocktail was created by Kenta Goto of Goto Bar, New York City.
Sake takes the place of vermouth to add the dryness, rounded out by the slight sweetness of Maraschino Liqueur. A salted cherry blossom subs in for an olive for that touch of salinity. Overall it’s a refreshing martini, and if you’re a fan of a “traditional” martini you can expand your palate with this option.
I chat a wee bit about one of my trips to Japan, visiting Tokyo during sakura season, and getting a bit of tattoo work done.

SAKURA MARTINI
INGREDIENTS
2 1/2 oz Sake
1 oz Gin
1/4 Tsp Maraschino Liqueur
GARNISH
Salted Cherry Blossom
METHOD
Stir all ingredients in mixing glass with ice until chilled. Strain into martini glass. Garnish with salted cherry blossom.
