"Hard Times Come Again No More" was written by Stephen Foster, one of America's most famous 19th-century songwriters. Foster composed the song in 1854, during a time of economic difficulty in the United States, and in his personal life. This was the period just before the Civil War, when the country was experiencing growing social and economic disparities.
