Algarve – Portogallo 4: Alla ricerca della Grotta Algar de Benagil e Praia do Castelo ad Albufeira

Algar de Benagil è una splendida grotta situata lungo la fascia costiera dell'Algarve, la regione a sud del Portogallo famosa per le sue spiagge da sogno. Si tratta di una maestosa grotta marina formata da tre aperture: due archi di circa cinquanta metri affacciati sull’oceano e una terza spaccatura circolare dal diametro di circa 20 metri posta sul tetto, come una sorta di lucernario che permette l’entrata dei raggi del sole e una magnifica vista del cielo.
All’interno di questa imponente bellezza naturale si nasconde una spiaggia, una lingua di sabbia dorata che si estende per oltre cento metri, un piccolo angolo di paradiso immerso in una cornice unica al mondo, dove ascoltare il suono potente delle onde oceaniche che si infrangono sulle pareti rocciose.
La Grotta di Benagil, è raggiungibile solo via mare e per visitarla è importante controllare l’orario delle maree, ma è soprattutto fondamentale non sottovalutare le forti correnti oceaniche che da sempre lambiscono questo tratto di costa. Anche se i più impavidi scelgono di affrontare il tratto di mare (corrispondente a tre vasche olimpioniche) in kayak o a nuoto, è molto più sicuro affidarsi ai tour organizzati in loco che, attraverso escursioni a bordo di imbarcazioni che partono ogni giorno dalle vicine spiagge, vi permetteranno di giungere alla grotta in tutta tranquillità.
A Praia do Castelo le scogliere si ergono alte, marcando distintamente il paesaggio. La spiaggia, incastonata tra pareti rocciose, è ricca di angoli nascosti e piccole baie. All'estremità orientale, una scenografica formazione rocciosa, che ricorda i merli di un castello fantastico, dà il nome alla spiaggia. Questo piccolo promontorio è profondamente eroso. Le sporgenze rocciose che spiccano sulla sabbia sono costituite di una pietra dura, molto resistente all'erosione del mare. Intorno alla spiaggia il colore dominante è il verde intenso dei pini e delle piante che si sono adattate all'ambiente marino, come la salicornia, l'atreplice mediterraneo e il finocchio marino. Un certo numero di uccelli, come falchi e grandi cormorani, apprezzano questi luoghi, inaccessibili ai predatori di terra.

Algar de Benagil is a splendid cave located along the coastal strip of the Algarve, the region in the south of Portugal famous for its dream beaches. It is a majestic sea cave formed by three openings: two arches of about fifty meters overlooking the ocean and a third circular crack with a diameter of about 20 meters located on the roof, like a sort of skylight that allows the entry of the sun's rays and a magnificent view of the sky.
Inside this imposing natural beauty there is a beach, a strip of golden sand that extends for over a hundred meters, a small corner of paradise immersed in a unique setting in the world, where you can listen to the powerful sound of the ocean waves crashing on the rocky walls.
The Benagil Cave can only be reached by sea and to visit it it is important to check the tide times, but above all it is essential not to underestimate the strong ocean currents that have always lapped this stretch of coast. Even if the most intrepid choose to tackle the stretch of sea (corresponding to three Olympic pools) by kayak or swimming, it is much safer to rely on the tours organized on site which, through excursions aboard boats that leave every day from the nearby beaches, will allow you to reach the cave in complete tranquility.
At Praia do Castelo the cliffs rise high, clearly marking the landscape. The beach, nestled between rocky walls, is full of hidden corners and small bays. At the eastern end, a scenic rock formation, reminiscent of the battlements of a fantastic castle, gives the beach its name. This small promontory is deeply eroded. The rocky outcrops that stand out on the sand are made of a hard stone, very resistant to sea erosion. Around the beach the dominant color is the intense green of the pine trees and plants that have adapted to the marine environment, such as glasswort, Mediterranean sea fennel and sea fennel. A number of birds, such as hawks and great cormorants, appreciate these places, inaccessible to land predators.
