Her name was Vera Lindstrom. She was twenty-six years old. She had been missing for eleven days.
The search party found her two miles south of Wallace, sitting on a stump beside the road with her hands folded in her lap. Her boots were caked in mud. Her skirt was torn at the hem. She was not injured. She was not starving. She looked, according to Deputy Marshal Frank Hollis, "like someone who'd just come from church and was waiting for a ride home."
