Meet Peter and Ronan Murray, a father-and-son team continuing four generations of farming along the River Suck in South Roscommon. Their calf-to-beef enterprise focuses on rearing Irish Hereford Prime cattle — known for their docility, grass efficiency, and consistent performance.
With a move from sucklers to dairy calves in 2012, the Murrays now rear around 30–35 Hereford calves annually. Their land includes peaty and callow ground, ideal for hardy Herefords who regularly gain over 200kg during their second summer.
Silage quality, paddock grazing, early turnout, and biodiversity management are all central to their approach. They weigh cattle regularly with Irish Hereford Prime and are now adopting low-emission slurry spreading to further improve sustainability.
Herefords have always been part of their farm — and they always will be.
