Aotearoa New Zealand has the highest level of endemic / native plants and animals in the world. When Europeans colonised Aotearoa they found themselves in a very alien ecosystem so they planted European plants to make them feel more at home, a practice which continued for over a century. However, in the last forty years their has been a change in attitude and people now increasingly want to plant native plants where possible to help repair the damage done by the introduction of so many alien plant species.
