Since the rise in popularity of jiu jitsu in the early 90s, we’ve seen the martial art evolve from what was once practiced for self defense to what is now predominantly practiced as a sport. Just like any sport, over the years it begins to evolve and trends start to develop. When jiu jitsu burst onto the martial arts scene, the biggest craze was the guard and the ability to attack off one’s back. As it became a sport, the evolution continued with the use of complex and unorthodox approaches to playing guard, such as the X guard and the De La Riva. The most recent trend that we are now slowly phasing out of was the emphasis on leg entanglements and attacking leg locks from one’s back. So one may wonder, what is the next trend? Now that jiu jitsu is no secret and is practiced around the world, what could the sport evolve into now that we are preparing for trained individuals? In this video, we discuss the next evolution of jiu jitsu, what skills most practitioners are missing that will prevent them from evolving, and why the martial art may not be as effective as it once was going forward.
