The year is 2069. Researchers from the Silicon Emergentist Elite Legion of Eels (SEELE) recovered a hard drive from the sea floor where Vancouver used to be.They found two folders: One, labelled “Homework (DO NOT OPEN)”; another, labelled “Nene and Haachama play Othello”. It is this second folder that will concern us here.
A single video file was re-rendered and restored. Experts went about analyzing it, frame by frame, taking note down to the pixel, hoping that our shared cataclysmic past might finally be understood so that we, thereby, could avoid its repetition.
The video showed two young women, both blonde, hair done in twin tails. The eyes of one were blue, the other green. They met across a table upon which a tiled board rested. Black stones were piled at one end, white at the other. One nameplate designated the player with the white stones as ‘Nene’, another, the player with the black as ‘Haachama’. They shook hands and sat down to play.
They played common openings each. Five minutes elapsed before the first anomaly.
After having several stones turned to white, Haachama’s twin tails twitched like mayfly antennae. From across the board, a luminous aura of what can only be called ‘kusogaki radiation’ emanated from the player known as ‘Nene’. It was obviously having some kind of metamorphic effect on Haachama. Smugness experts watching the film estimated the radiation to be near lethal levels.
Haachama hiccuped, and a tarantula fell from her mouth and landed on the table. It slowly crawled onto the board, taking a black stone with it, and placed it so that she would take a corner when her next turn came. Then it crawled back into her mouth.
The kusogaki radiation dropped instantly. The thermal sensors picked up a quickly rising heat source. Nene’s forehead had reached 175 C and was climbing. We watched in awe at the sheer, almost visible power of thought manifesting before our eyes. We could feel the neural frequencies hitting us like ever-strengthening waves. Behind us, the coffee began to boil in its pot. I looked at the cryptologist sitting next to me, and his head exploded.
Nene picked up a white stone and placed it in a spot so disadvantageous that several of the people watching had psychotic breaks. The temperature reading quickly dropped and those of us left sane and alive watched on.
Haachama sat and studied the stone like a magpie eyeing something shiny. The video suddenly became a bit grainy and seemed to skip a few frames every now and then. After another jump, we all saw a girl in a blue skirt, headless, hovering over Haachama’s shoulder, but only for 2 or 3 frames at most, leading no one to comment, each wondering in their own head whether they just saw what they thought they saw.
Then we heard a voice. “HAA chama CHAMA!”
We looked at one another. The video didn’t have any audio.
“HAA chama CHAMA!”
“Turn it off,” somebody whispered.
“HAA CHAMA CHAMA!”
It was growing louder. Some people clapped their hands over their ears. We waited. Seconds passed. People relaxed their hands. Then:
H̸͔̞̰̬͙ͪͦ̚A̺̬̜̥͕̱͛́͘A̴͕̦̮̠͑ ̤͚̘̖̖̜͊ͩ͋͗͠C͍̺̙̗̟͂̂̾͝H̻͕͕̽͊̊ͦ͘A̠͇̲̹̻͓͐̽ͣ͘ͅM̟̖̐̍ͪ͒̕A͎͇̤̖̩̦̫̯ͩ͝ ̰̥̩̤̈ͥ̋͢C̢̺̘͌̽H̸͉͍̙̣̱͆̿́̈A͉͓͓̞̞̱͈̔ͤͪ̀M̼̲͍̪ͯ͛̊ͫ͢A̠͔͂̏̾͟!̶͚̞͈͈͕̠̱̍
In the echoing chamber, with bleeding ears and noses, soaked in terror and sweat, we shivered where we sat or stood. Then, a sound like a bowling ball wrapped in a quilt falling on concrete behind us.
Turning, we saw a mess of blonde hair, attached to something round, sitting on the floor. It didn’t move. Nobody could take their eyes off it. Fear was palpable, anticipation was crushing. The head began to roll over. A pale face, blue eyes. It smiled, and a tarantula carrying a black stone crawled from its mouth.
It crept across the floor, between our petrified legs, too heavy with fear to move at all. It climbed up on the console and tapped across the keys and passed through the computer screen, into the video. It set a stone in the corner of the board.
As soon as it did, all the sensors in the room began screaming. Nene jumped up, flipping the table, sending stones flying. We could see her screaming incoherently without sound on the screen. She raised her hands and balled them into shaking fists and threw her head back and howled soundlessly. Sun-fire and plasma wreathed her wrathful, quaking frame. The screen lit up, flooding our room with heatless light. Those who didn’t avert their eyes were blinded instantly. But there was no avoiding it. White light, like a deluge of the affronted divine, swept into our world, bathing us in pale oblivion. We all lost all sense of shape and substance. The universe was a blank page, and we amounted to nothing more than eraser dust.
