The records which keep us coming back for repeated listening, tend to be the ones in which sonic jewels are buried; treatments and tricks which we didn’t notice on the first listen.
In this video, Jono is putting 8 bars of a song under the microscope to see how little Easter eggs can be hidden in plain sight. He’ll look at automated vocal treatments, finding little phrases to loop, add reverb to or delay. Jono will also process beat loops in a couple of different ways, making sure each has its own tonal footprint, to avoid sounds clashing.

Production gives us the opportunity to make bold sonic moves. But at the mix stage, the subtle ones often endure just as nicely.
