Drawing a Long Haired Dachshund in Soft Pastels – Pet Portrait Timelapse (Part One)

Watch as this long haired dachshund starts to come to life, condensing about three hours into five minutes, I take you briefly through my technique as I show you how I draw pet portraits in soft pastels.

Long haired dachshunds are a really popular breed, so if you’re wanting to go into pet portraits you will definitely come across these gorgeous dogs at some point! I upped the scale on this drawing a bit, so it was a bit easier and more beginner friendly (30x40cm), as this one wasn't a commission, but drawn specifically as a tutorial.

The reference photo I used for this one is so beautiful. I love the contrast in colouring and the light source is beautifully dramatic. Meaning we can really play with those tonal values.

It’s also great to do another ear with long overlapping hair - but on a larger scale. You’ll see it’s a very similar technique to how we did Monty the Cocker Spaniel, but simpler on this size.
