Outlander | Jamie & Claire | Till I Loved You | Season 1 & 3

Today's video is dedicated to my dear friend T. She has mentioned time and again how much the song “Till I Loved You” by Barbara Streisand & Don Johnson 🌸    • Till I Loved You   moves her when combined with images of Jamie & Claire. So I've been planning to create a video for this song for a while. For my video, I used the cover version by The Love Songs Band.
I must admit that this song caused me some problems. It's very beautiful and evokes emotions, but in some places the lyrics are not quite suitable for Jamie & Claire. I've been pondering for a long time how I could use the song. I made several attempts and repeatedly set them aside without success. But as T's birthday drew closer, I got back to work. Still it took a lot of nerve. T gets to see my videos before anyone else. She's my advisor, critic and inspirer at the same time and has often helped me to see things more clearly and find solutions. She knows that I often stumble over my own expectations, self-imposed limitations, or requirements, and in those moments she points out to me that most of it is only important to me, but probably not to my viewers, and that it's ok to deviate from my own standards from time to time. In this case, that probably means not taking the lyrics quite so literally in places (at least that's what I assume she would have told me if I had been able to ask her).
The song actually tells the story of a love that develops from a long and deep friendship. It's about a love that both were blind to for a long time, until at some point the curtain lifted and they realized that they loved each other. That may apply to Claire but certainly not to Jamie. For Claire, it was a friendship of sorts at first, but for Jamie it was love from the start. Well, the lyrics are what they are and I tried to interpret the relevant passages in a way that made sense, despite my inner voice protesting (and it does with regard to several text passages🥴).
The theme of 'friendship becomes love' therefore only applies to our heroes to a very limited extent. Another difficulty in the realization was that the moment of awakening, the moment the curtain lifted, was different for both of them. For Jamie, that moment was when he held her in his arms in Leoch and comforted her. But when was that special moment for Claire? I guess there's more disagreement among fans on that. For me, it's the moment when he first took her to the stones and gave her the opportunity to return to her own time. I think the events and his actions after the witch trial, after he learned the whole truth about her, finally lifted the curtain on her. The fact that he believed her and selflessly decided in her favor, that he was willing to let her go out of love, opened her eyes. The decision between Frank and Jamie seemed unthinkable at first, but in the end her innermost being decided. Her heart knew where it belonged and led her back to Jamie even before her mind could consciously make this decision.
It's this very moment the song is circling around and so I decided to switch back and forth between the two perspectives at these points, while the way there rather shows Claire's or Jamie's pov. He loved her fiercely from the beginning and realized that she could give his life meaning again. She, on the other hand, denied the feelings she had for him, but little by little he enchanted her, captured her and won her heart, little by little the curtain lifted, parted and drifted.
I mainly used footage from S1, but the song is almost 5 minutes long and at some point I decided to include S3 as well. By also referring to their years of separation, I was able to add another point of interpretation. Because when she returns, the moment of realization is the same for both of them. What is between them is still there. And so it is, that ever since they fell in love, they have been each other's salvation, hope and destiny and the only thing they urgently need to be happy.

And now, my dear T, I hope that I've finally managed to tell the song in my own typical way and to touch you with it. Happy birthday, dear one! And to the rest of you: of course I hope you like it too. SWAK 💋😉💕❤️
