BMW 330i Vanos Solenoid Actuator Replacement DIY (2019-Present BMW G20 330i, M340i, G22 430i, M440i)

►VANOS was pretty revolutionary in its day, bringing variable cam timing to engines at a time when you could still buy a carbureted vehicle in the United States. It's all but a regularity among automotive engines these days, making it far more reliable than ever. That said, you may have to replace the VANOS solenoid actuators on your BMW's B48 or B58 engine. They can leak oil, which will be prominent considering the oil pressure surrounding them, or fail internally, leaving you with less power and worse fuel economy.

The VANOS actuators are fed by the engine oil and electronically controlled by the engine computer to optimize camshaft timing via oil pressure. All that oil flowing through the actuator can clog it with debris if the oil hasn't been changed regularly enough. In other instances, the o-rings sealing them to the valve cover will shrink or swell, leading to a leak. Replacing them is fairly involved, but it opens up the opportunity for more repairs, if needed, on top of the engine.
