Can you engineer your way out of vulnerability? After the devastating floods of 1953 (covered in the last video) the Dutch resolved to make their country more robust in the face of all that watery danger. The answer was the Delta Works, a set of projects that guarded against water coming from the North Sea, and water coming down the great river systems that cut across the Netherlands.
In this video I continue my walk across the mighty Oosterscheldekering, with its concrete and steel and its artificial islands. It was quite an incredible walk, full of things to see and marvel at. The Netherlands may not be Switzerland, but open your eyes and get walking, and I promise you'll not be disappointed!
This is the third of four videos from this second walk. In the first I look at the fragility of the Netherlands, in effect a giant delta. In the second I look at the shock of the 1953 Dutch floods. In the final one I look at the socio-political system that underpins the Dutch approach to water vulnerability, the polder system.
I'm Nicholas Walton, I'm a journalist and author, and this channel is for everybody who likes going for a walk and seeing what it tells you about life, the universe and everything.
