TenWalksExplain
I'm walking across the Netherlands and wondering what it all means: ten walks, four videos a walk, each one helping to explain this amazing country, where it comes from, why it works as it does, what its people are like, and (crucially) the challenges it now faces with climate change and political and social headwinds. This is the video version of my new book 'Orange Sky, Rising Water'.
Put one foot in front of another, go for a walk and look around, talk to people, think about the landscape. This is not a typical hiking channel: it's walking as journalism, trying to understand and explain countries and places by walking slowly through them.
I'm Nicholas Walton, a journalist, author and hiker, and a long time ago I realised that to understand a place I had to see it on foot, at something like 4 miles per hour. These videos are of me, walking through landscapes - mountains, forests, beaches, and fields, but also housing estates, industrial structures, the unpromising sides of cities.
