Did things just heat up? We also never thought we’d ever be so excited to see public bins lol!
We found ourselves in a beautiful town called Noboribetsu which is an area known for its natural hot springs and a volcanic crater called Jigokudani (Hells Valley) and yes it does smell incredibly strong of sulphur.
Here we were able to see our first cultural tradition in Japan, where there was a Demon Fireworks done during the summer season. During the event there are handheld fireworks that can be lit up to 8 meters! This was really cool to watch and also a free event, make sure to get there early to get a good spot. This event is only held from early June to late July.
We also got to try their famous spicy Ramen at the Enmaken Ramen restaurant which fell into our top 3 best Ramens. If you like chilli and something that’s packed full of flavour go there.
Onto to Mt Yotei, to end our time in Hokkaido and have a bit of R&R. We did a beginners hike along side the volcano as we’re not fit nor equiped enough for a summit hike, it was dense bush with ALOT of pesky bugs everywhere but the view was nice, we even got to see a tiny squirrel.
It’s at this point we are starting to miss the privacy you get in the outback camping vs driving city to city. We do love the isolation feeling that it brings and the privacy of being emerged in nature.
We managed to get the ferry on the same and start making some tracks to mainland Japan.
