QUILT A NIGHTTIME LANDSCAPE PLAYLIST: • Quilt a Nighttime Landscape
"We have the capacity for infinite creativity." —Jackie Gleason
In this course, we will work from a photograph to design and quilt a body of water at night, beginning with how to collect quiltable views and ending with bindings, hanging sleeves, and any finishing embellishments. We will actually cover both a mini quilt (with a "wooden" frame) and a full-size version using the techniques of mature raw-edge applique. Please use your own photo, fabrics, colors, etc., as you prefer.
Not all the text and close-up images are preserved from CourseCraft. What follows here is what I think the course is about. [Also, some of my original spiel for each video is copied to the individual video descriptions on YT.]
TWO PROJECT VERSIONS allow alternate methods of doing things, as well as the flexibility to start small for those who will pick that option.
MATURE RAW-EDGE APPLIQUE (REA) and other fiber techniques unlock possibilities for creating visual fiber art not afforded by more traditional means. Plus fiber art is addictive fun. If you aren’t addicted already, maybe you should stay away…
THE BLUE HOUR...As a kid, I sometimes helped my brothers with their paper routes. I loved that time around sunrise when refracting light paints the landscape with possibilities for the new day. Many years later I learned that that glowing time—which also occurs at twilight—is called The Blue Hour by photographers. It made sense. For years I had found myself continually collecting photos around dusk and sunrise and then making landscape quilts from them.
LIMINALITY...At some point I learned the term, liminal, which refers to something that is transitioning from one state to another, no longer firmly footed on either side of a line, but essentially on it. Being half asleep, dozing on the couch, is an example of liminality. So are twilight and the Blue Hour, when day begins turning into night. A mild infatuation with these ideas lodged in my brain and would turn over and roll around at the oddest moments. At some point they took root in my thoughts as a metaphor for what happens when we experience a creative breakthrough. I hope the course videos will empower you to tinker with a new surface technique, stitch in a foreign way, try a fresh construction, and stretch out a little.
We begin with a lesson on SAVING PHOTOS for inspiration and end with a reminder to photograph your own work. In between, we’ll cross the valley of intuitive sewing for landscape quilting. We’ll employ mature REA technique with a well-packed bag of fiber art tricks and tools close at hand. I hope you'll use your feelings about your emerging piece as your creative North Star, and trust your sincerity as an artist as your best compass. And I’ll just show you exactly how I do stuff.
If you already know me, you know I like using videos to teach sewing, which is why so much of the course is in video format.
There are 16 new videos in the course, for a total of more than 2.5 hours of video instruction available. There are also some supplementary handouts—downloadable PDFs on the drop dropdown menu of my website. [Only available until 7-1-2022, when my website will be deleted. My facebook page and the ability to message me there will remain available to you.] Thanks, Beth/Zazu
