Your vintage outboard motor can run for decades with easy to learn maintenance practices. This video provides an overview for a typical lower unit gearcase repair on a vintage 1956 12HP Johnson / Evinrude / OMC outboard motor.
In this session, tap threads into the shift rod seal's brass bushing so that a long bolt can be threaded in the bushing to extract it providing access to the shift rod seal's O-ring.
Replace the O-ring with a new one, and press the brass bushing back into place. This can be accomplished with a socket that is slightly smaller in diameter than the bushing. Lightly hammer the bushing into its hole in the gearcase until it is flush with the top of the orifice.
