Diaphragmatic Breathing in Quadruped:
Diaphragmatic breathing is an important tool to help our bodies learn how to connect/reconnect the pieces of our deep core system altogether. These deep core pieces includes the diaphragm, abdominals, pelvic floor, and spinal muscles. All four muscles = the deep core system.
Diaphragmatic breathing - see link below - in quadruped is the next progression from diaphragmatic breathing while lying on your back. Begin on all fours, with your wrists right under your shoulders, knees underneath your hips, and spine long in neutral (optional: use a yoga block or pillow on the back of your pelvis to help you maintain your spinal alignment as you breathe). As you inhale, focus on letting your pelvic floor lengthen/relax while inviting your belly and ribcage to expand 360deg. Then as you exhale, focus on connecting/contracting your pelvic floor while connecting/contracting your abdominals from your lower abdominals first and continuing that connection to the upper abdominals near your ribcage. Repeat this over a series of breath cycles.
Note: If this position is uncomfortable for your wrists, feel free to support your upper body with your forearms grounded on a box that enables your shoulders and hips to be at the same level, with elbows lined up right under your shoulders.
