The inclusive business model developed by 14 Trees Ltd, and supported by the Malawi Innovation Challenge Fund (MICF), sought to address one of the chronic problems faced in Malawi; the impact of widespread deforestation, driven, in part, by the demand for wood used in the production of burnt bricks.
The project focused on the development of an environmentally friendly brick, a Soil Stabilised Brick (SSB) product, branded Durabric. Durabric bricks are compressed using pressure in a mould and left naturally to cure without firing. By avoiding the firing phase, Durabric reduces greenhouse gas emissions tenfold compared to traditional fired bricks.
This impact video showcases how the MICF supported 14 Trees Ltd to up-scale production and promotion of Durabric and explains the potential positive environmental impacts that the product will have in Malawi.
