German Soldiers Couldn't Believe the American Who Attacked Their Fortress Alone for Three Days

May 11, 1944, Gustav Line, Italy. German soldiers watched from Castle Aghinolfi as another American assault stalled against their fortress. Concrete pillboxes, MG-42 machine guns, and months of preparation had turned these Italian mountains into an impenetrable killing zone. The 85th Infantry Division had lost hundreds trying to break through. Intelligence said it would take weeks of artillery bombardment and armor support. The Gustav Line had held for six months, bleeding the Allies white.

Then 23-year-old First Lieutenant Robert T. Waugh from Maine—an engineering student commissioned just eight months earlier—decided the fortress wasn't impenetrable. It was just defended by men who believed it was.

For three consecutive days, Waugh waged a one-man war against the Gustav Line that military historians still struggle to explain. Not a single moment of heroism, but 72 hours of sustained, calculated aggression that systematically destroyed German morale and broke their defensive line.

Day One: When his platoon pinned down by MG-42 fire, Waugh charged the first pillbox alone. He sprinted 200 yards across open ground, dodging machine gun fire that should have killed him instantly, and destroyed the position with grenades. Then he immediately attacked the second pillbox. Then the third. German soldiers watched through binoculars in stunned paralysis as one American officer did what entire companies couldn't accomplish.

Day Two: Wounded from the previous day's assault, Waugh refused evacuation and led another attack. He personally destroyed two more fortified positions, captured 14 German soldiers, and advanced his platoon through terrain the Germans considered impassable. A captured German NCO later told interrogators: "We shot him. We saw him fall. Then he stood up and kept coming. My gunner said this American is possessed."

Day Three: With multiple wounds, exhausted beyond human endurance, and ordered to withdraw for medical treatment, Waugh instead led the final assault. He charged German positions through sustained MG-42 fire, destroying enemy fortifications until a burst of machine gun fire finally killed him instantly on May 14, 1944.

The German defenders, veteran troops who had survived the Eastern Front and held these mountains for six months, broke. Entire positions abandoned their weapons and retreated because they couldn't comprehend what they'd witnessed. One American lieutenant had proven their impregnable fortress was vulnerable to something they couldn't fortify against: absolute refusal to accept defeat.

Intelligence officers studying German after-action reports found desperate attempts to explain what happened. Some described "multiple American assault teams" because accepting it was one man shattered their tactical doctrine. A German Hauptmann captured on Day Two told his interrogators: "Nobody will believe me when I say one officer did this."

For three days of extraordinary heroism under fire, leading from the front, refusing evacuation despite multiple wounds, and single-handedly breaking a defensive line that had stopped an entire division, First Lieutenant Robert T. Waugh received the Medal of Honor posthumously. President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented it to Waugh's father at the White House in September 1944.

Then his story almost vanished. Unlike Audie Murphy or Alvin York, Waugh had no Hollywood career. No bestselling autobiography. He left behind no widow or children to preserve his memory. His parents grieved quietly in Texas, never seeking attention. The Italian Campaign never captured public imagination like Normandy or the Pacific. Within 20 years, the most decorated soldier from the Gustav Line breakthrough was nearly forgotten outside military circles.

His story survived in military archives, Medal of Honor databases, and the institutional memory of the 85th Infantry Division. In 1998, military historian Flint Whitlock rediscovered Waugh's after-action reports and devoted an entire chapter to him. Today, the U.S. Army Infantry School teaches Waugh's assault as a case study in small-unit tactics and combat leadership, asking lieutenants: "When does individual initiative become the key to breakthrough?"

This documentary-style video tells Waugh's complete story: the three-day assault that defied tactical probability, the German perspective of disbelief, the Medal of Honor his father received, and why America almost forgot the engineering student who proved that courage, not firepower, breaks defensive lines.

Unseen Comrades brings you in-depth Medal of Honor stories and forgotten WW2 heroes whose courage shaped history. Subscribe for long-form military documentaries about extraordinary soldiers whose names deserve to be remembered.
