Running heel-first causes shin splints! Research has found that after the heel strikes the ground, the forefoot smacks hard onto the ground, causing an audible slapping noice. The forefoot-slapping caused unusual prolonged contractions of the shin muscles, leading to pre-mature muscular fatigue and cramps.
In forefoot running, shin splints is resolved because at touchdown there's a smoother placement of the foot with the ground, resulting in minimal forefoot-slapping which in turn reduces straining contractions in the shins.
