The EU-funded project Bioplastics Europe (https://bioplasticseurope.eu/) aims to research sustainable strategies and solutions for bio-based products to support the EU Plastics Strategy and a Circular Economy. In this Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Lukas Miksch, biologist at the Alfred Wegener Institute, shows how he and his colleagues investigate the degradation of bio-based and bio-degradability and their effects on marine biota. They demonstrate how they quantify enzymatic degradation of bio-based and conventional plastics and the conclusions that they draw from their results on the degradability of plastics in the oceans.
