Choosing Gravel Events PLUS Back-to-Back Wins!

On this action packed weekend where I was single-parenting, I also choose to tackle back-to-back local races. Vermont hosts a handful of events, but it's especially rare they occur on consecutive days. While summer's in full swing and fitness is on the high level of the spectrum, I thought it was wise to bite off as much as I can chew and took on Detoor and Eastern Grind, a gravel and mountain bike race, respectfully. The former costs a minuscule $28 and the latter is still inexpensive and is a fundraiser for the local junior development team.
Which got me thinking, WHAT IS THE WAY IN WHICH YOU CHOOSE YOUR EVENTS? Do you prefer the big ones, do you pepper in some small ones, does cost have any bearing on your decision, what about a swag bag, does proximity to home matter, and does length enter your consideration? I'm curious. I asked, you answer. Please.
