In Part 5 of this series, I construct a full-page pocket within the next section of the Victorian commonplace book, working with a fragment of antique broderie anglais and decorating it with an antique cigarette silk.
To accompany the pocket, I create a large journaling card using an original illustration plate from the book’s text, combined with other carefully chosen antique paper fragments. The card is sized to slip neatly into the pocket, balancing structure with softness.
On the facing page, I pause. Rather than forcing a decision, I set aside a Victorian calling card as a future focal point and intentionally leave the page incomplete, allowing space for the right element to present itself in time.
In this episode, you’ll see:
Construction of a full-page pocket using antique textiles
Decorating with cigarette silks and broderie anglais
Creating a large journaling card from original book plates
Choosing restraint over completion when a page isn’t ready
This moment of hesitation is part of the process—an acknowledgment that not every page needs to be resolved at once.
