Day 19 (June 18): We start out in the morning riding up Ute Trail from Salida. We meet Jen on the trail, and she really boosts us up the hill with wonderful conversations. We keep having wonderful experiences of kind humans: The subculture bike shop in the high-valley village of Salida fixed Fred’s derailleur and bleeds his brakes on the most busy day, two land managers give us grapes, cherries, water on our climb towards Hartsel, and the fire fighters of Como invite us into the station during a storm.
The ride up Boreas pass before Breckinridge tests our stamina and mindset: We follow the race gpx and go up the challenging Gold Dust Single Track during a storm (clearly made for downhill mountain biking not climbing up) - what an end to a 97mile day with 8970feet of climbing! We are proud of ourselves for riding strong despite rain, elevation, and challenging terrain!
