How Tal Converted a Passed Pawn into a Forced Checkmate | Berlin 1986

The game begins in the French Defense (C06), where Tal chooses a solid structure and avoids early complications. After the middlegame exchanges, the position simplifies into a bishop-and-knight endgame where activity and pawn structure become critical.
The key moment comes with 48. b6!, when Tal creates a dangerous passed pawn on the queenside. This pawn restricts Black’s pieces and forces them into defensive roles. While Black resists accurately, Tal steadily improves his king position, coordinates his bishop and knight, and prepares a second breakthrough.
The passed pawn distraction allows Tal to promote on the kingside with 81. g8=Q, converting the advantage into a winning queen endgame. From there, Tal calmly restricts the enemy king and executes a precise mating net, ending the game with 91. Qh2#.
