In the summer of 1972 the Yankees had a brief run into contention, the high point of which was a four game series against the first place Detroit Tigers, managed at the time by Billy Martin, who was trash-talking the Yankees as not being worthy of the first division (hence the Daily News cartoon). Here is the final game of the four game series as called on WMCA Radio by Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer and Bill White and in a brief foreshadowing of the future, John Sterling, at the time hosting a sports talk show on WMCA, is in the booth briefly with Rizzuto in the first inning, the earliest date the future voice of the Yankees is known to have been in the Yankee booth during a game!
Pregame interview with Yankee executive Howard Berk (who would resign the next year in the early weeks of the Steinbrenner regime). The audio is static filled in this spot but clears up and is pristine after that. Station ID promos are done by the WMCA talk show hosts of the day (Barry Gray, Malachy McCourt etc.)
